Beyond Walls, Bringing Learning Closer

In the remote villages of Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh, a classroom may sometimes be as simple as an open veranda. There may be no elaborate infrastructure, no smart boards or sophisticated learning spaces. Yet, within these simple spaces, something powerful is taking place — children are learning, exploring and imagining new possibilities.

Through the support of Tata Electronics, United Way Chennai, through Act to Transform, is helping bring learning opportunities closer to children in remote communities where access to additional educational support can be limited.

The initiative reaches children through 200 learning centres, with each centre supporting around 15–25 children. These centres become more than places for after-school learning. They become safe and welcoming spaces where children can ask questions, discover their interests, complete their homework and simply enjoy the process of learning.

Here, teachers go beyond textbooks.

They support children with their homework, encourage extracurricular activities, introduce opportunities for exploration and creativity, and create an environment where learning is not restricted to what happens inside a traditional classroom.

The programme also includes nutrition support, recognising that a child’s ability to learn is closely connected to their overall well-being. Education is not only about what a child knows; it is also about ensuring that the child has the support and environment needed to learn well.

And perhaps that is what makes these learning centres special.

A simple veranda can become a classroom.
A teacher can become a mentor.
A few children gathered together can become a community of learners.
And a small learning opportunity can become the beginning of a much bigger dream.

For children living in remote villages, distance should never decide the quality of opportunity they receive.

Through this initiative, United Way Chennai and Tata Electronics are helping take education beyond walls — bringing learning closer to communities and creating possibilities that extend far beyond the classroom.
